Each year WACC recruits internationally renowned speakers from around the world to speak on topics ranging from economics to globalization to foreign policy.  These programs are held at various locations in our community throughout the year and are designed to cover a wide range of topics and current events.  In the aftermath of September 11th, the Council sponsored several programs on the Middle East and provided tapes of these programs for teachers in Mecklenburg County.

Michael T. Klare is the author of thirteen books, including Blood and Oil and Resource Wars. A regular contributor to Harper’s, Foreign Affairs, and the Los Angeles Times, he is the defense analyst for The Nation and the director of the Five College Program in Peace and World Security Studies at Hampshire College in Amherst.

Biography Summary: Dr. Sommer was born in 1930 in Constance, Germany and grew up in Schwäbisch Gmünd. He studied History, Political Science and International Relations in Sweden, at Manchester College, North Manchester, Ind., and the University of Chicago; Sommer wrote his Ph.D. thesis on “Germany and Japan between the Powers, 1935-1940“ (University of Tübingen, 1962). He was a 1960 participant in Henry Kissinger’s International Summer Seminar, Harvard University and a reader for Political Science at the University of Hamburg from 1967-1970. In 1972, Sommer lectured at Harvard University’s Center for European Studies.
