BIOGRAPHY

The topic of responsible environmental policy has been receiving increased attention with N.C. Treasurer Richard Moore calling for evaluation of the pros and cons of transitioning to alternative fuels.  John Hofmeister, President of Shell Oil Company, will provide WACC members and guests the opportunity to hear an informed opinion from a businessman’s perspective on the energy needs of the U.S and potential responses to those needs.

Hofmeister believes that to ensure U.S. energy for the future, the energy industry must address the delicate balance between energy production and consumption with increased supply.  He calls for a full array of energy sources including oil and gas from conventional and unconventional sources, and encourages the development of clean fossil fuels and alternative and renewable energy sources, while conducting business in socially and environmentally responsible ways.

Hofmeister earned a master’s degree in political science from Kansas State University.  During his career, he has lived and worked in North America, Europe and Asia.  He is a member of the Department of Energy’s new Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technical Advisory Committee.  He also currently serves on the boards of the American Petroleum Institute, United States Energy Association, National Association of Manufacturers, National Urban League and the Foreign Policy Association, and is a Fellow of the National Academy of Human Resources.
