The World Affairs Council of Charlotte Honors Student Excellence in German Language: Charlotte-Mecklenburg Area Students Participate in Language Luncheon

Charlotte, N.C. – The World Affairs Council of Charlotte will host its German Language Luncheon on Thursday, May 15th, 2008 at 12:00 PM at Waldhorn Restaurant (12101 Lancaster Hwy). Students and teachers from 15 Charlotte-area high schools will participate in the Language Luncheon to honor high school students with outstanding German language conversation skills. Special guest Hon. Kurt Waldthausen, Honorary Consul of Germany, will speak at the luncheon. The German Language Luncheon is also co-sponsored by the Federal Republic of Germany, Charlotte Latin School and the German-American Chamber of Commerce.

Students attending the Language Luncheon will have the opportunity to interact with German speakers and meet students with similar levels of language skill. In addition, ten high school students from Germany participating the Windows on America (WOA) Program, a two-week educational exchange program for German students to study in the United States, will attend the Luncheon in partnership with International House, World Learning, and the U.S. Embassy in Berlin.

Schools participating this year are: Charlotte Latin School, South Mecklenburg High School, West Charlotte High School, Harding University High School, East Mecklenburg High School, West Mecklenburg High School, Providence High School, Butler High School, North Mecklenburg High School, Charlotte Catholic High School, Global Studies at Olympic High School, Providence Day High School, Charlotte Country Day School, Ardrey Kell High School and Myers Park High School.

The Council previously hosted the Spanish Language Luncheon and the French Language Luncheon on March 31st and April 3rd respectively.
