EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH Each year, the World Affairs Council of Charlotte gives away over $20,000 to teachers and students in Charlotte-Mecklenburg and surrounding counties! Since 1996 we have directly impacted almost 700 teachers who in turn have impacted over 60,000 students.Academic WorldQuest: Based on the adult model, teams from each local public and private high school in Mecklenburg County, as well as some of the surrounding counties, are invited to compete for awards in this international trivia competition. This event has gained in popularity so that many schools have an Academic WorldQuest Coach and students compete for the honor of representing their schools. The top school is then invited to participate in the national Academic WorldQuest in Washington, D.C. This event will be held on November 15, 2007, at First Presbyterian Church in uptown Charlotte. To request more information, please email or call Jennifer Armentrout at 704-687-7762 or jarmentr@worldaffairscharlotte.org. Council Scholars: This program recognizes outstanding Charlotte area teachers, grades 6-12, who have demonstrated a commitment to, and interest in international education. The grant of $2,500 may be used to attend international conferences or to participate in study abroad programs. Past Council Scholars have been able to bring back and share with their students new perspectives, which have enriched and enhanced the classroom experience for all involved. Wireman Leadership Awards: With the support of the Wachovia Foundation, the WACC provides $2,500 travel grants to teachers in Leadership and Global Economics Schools (a magnet program in CMS Schools) and other internationally-focused school programs in Mecklenburg County. Like the Council Scholar Program, the Billy O. Wireman Leadership Awards allow educators to participate in study abroad opportunities that enable them to bring an international perspective to their classrooms. Please apply by visiting the Council Scholar webpage. International Language Luncheon: These luncheons have celebrated junior and seniors in Mecklenburg County and the surrounding areas who excel at speaking French, German, Spanish, Chinese, Greek, and any other language taught at surrounding schools. The students will be brought together in a social atmosphere and provided with the opportunity to interact with speakers fluent in their chosen language. Local students will consider invitations to this luncheon an honor and a sign of excellence. Click here for more information on the International Language Luncheon Center for Leadership and Global Economics (L&GE): This magnet program in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools invites children to become students of the world through exposure to global issues and cultures. Primary areas of focus are academics, leadership and teamwork, global awareness, and responsible and ethical decision making. The program offers students opportunities to participate in authentic exercises to enhance their leadership skills. The World Affairs Council of Charlotte is one of several local organizations partnering with the L&GE program. For educators to share their knowledge of the world with their students, they must first have a certain comfort level with the subject matter. Through teacher workshops on various regions of the world, grant opportunities that underwrite programs and travel abroad, and access to more than 100 unique program ideas for all age levels, the Council hopes to make these educators jobs just a little bit easier. The Council will also provide the schools with speakers who can enlighten both teachers and students to international current events.
