Mary Caroll Alexander, International
Studies School at Garinger
A 9th
grade Earth Environmental Science teacher, Alexander will
travel to The Republic of Namibia with the Cheetah
Conservation Fund, a graduate-level course for educators
through Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. Upon returning,
Alexander wants African-born students to feel more at home
in her classroom and to increase parental involvement. She
plans to begin video conferencing with schools throughout
the world to engage students in working to solve
environmental problems in her earth science class.

Tiffany DiMatteo, Myers Park High
School
An 11th
& 12th grade English teacher, DiMatteo will go to
Madrid, Spain for the 2008 Women’s Worlds Interdisciplinary
Congress. More than two hundred students at Myers Park High
School have Limited English Proficiency (LEP), and the
conference will allow DiMatteo to gain insight in to the
challenges for English as a Second Language (ESL) and LEP
students in her classes, as well as enhancing her ability to
communicate with first-generation parents.

Gigliotti, South Mecklenburg High School
A 9th-12th
grade French teacher, Gigliotti will use the funds to attend
the American Association of Teachers of French Conference in
Liege, Belgium. She plans to establish foreign exchange
opportunities, distance learning through inter-class videos,
pen pal exchanges, classroom blogs and podcasts drawn from
her experiences at the conference. |
