Brian Hitt,
Olympic High School
Brian
received his BA at NC State and his JD at Widener University
(Delaware), as well as his Teacher Certificate from Queens
University. He’s been teaching Social Studies at Olympic
for 5 years and he will visit their partner school in
Berlin, Germany. His classes exchange emails with their
counterparts at the school and engage in discussions on
topics relating to both countries. The Germans have visited
Olympic twice but they have never had the opportunity to
reciprocate.

Natasha
Thompson, International Studies School at Garinger
Natasha
has never been abroad and will be the principal at the new
International Studies School at Garinger, which opens in the
fall. Natasha taught for 5 years before moving to
administration for 5 years. She received her BA in English
Education at NC A&T University and her Master of School
Administration at UNC Charlotte. She will go on a program
organized by Global Links, called the Global Educators
Program. She will gain input from her faculty and students
in the fall as to where she will go based on three global
areas the school will focus on (China, South Africa, or a
Spanish-speaking country).

    Marie
Calabro, Beverly Woods Elementary
Marie has
been teaching for 21 years and for 4 ½ years at Beverly
Woods. She teaches Special Education (all subjects) and
received her BA from Saint Leo University (Florida) in
Elementary Education/Mental Retardation. She is an avid
songwriter and guitar player (she occasionally performs in
coffee houses in Charlotte with her three teenagers) and
will go to Ireland on an Irish Folk Music tour to compare it
with NC Appalachian folk music and integrate it into the 4th
grade curriculum study on North Carolina.

 Yevgenia
Arutyunyan, Charlotte Country Day
Originally
from Russia, she received her BA from Davidson College in
History and her MA in Liberal Studies from Wake Forest
University. She has been teaching a variety of world history
courses at Country Day for the past 6 years and has a wealth
of international experience under her belt. Yevgenia is
excited about her plans to study Arabic and Islamic culture
next summer at Damascus University in Syria. While she has
enjoyed studying with a private tutor for the past year, she
is looking forward to using her Arabic in real-life
situations with a host family organized by Arabesk.
